Understanding What Moves Semiconductor Component Lead Times

The challenge

A quoted lead time can move for several different reasons

A market and competitive intelligence team inside a manufacturer tracked the lead times quoted on the components it buys, meaning how long a supplier says an order will take to arrive. The number was public, which is why the team tracked it and also why it could only tell them so much.

A lead time lengthens when demand rises. It also lengthens when a supplier moves capacity to another product, when a distributor changes how it books orders, or when a customer orders ahead to protect itself. Each of those points to a different action, and the published number looks the same in every case. The reason sits with the people who allocate the capacity and the people who take the orders, and it is not written down anywhere.

We ran expert calls with former planners inside chip plants, distribution managers and procurement leads: the people who decide what capacity goes to which product, how orders are booked, and what is actually being quoted to a buyer. Calls covered how allocation decisions are made, what changes a booking pattern, and how much of the order book was ordering ahead rather than real demand.

We sourced across the chain rather than at one point, so answers from one part of it could be checked against another. The brief also identified the people worth going back to, because the engagement was scoped from the start to repeat: the same questions, to the same roles, on a cadence the team set. Coverage followed the supply chain rather than a geography.

The outcome

The reason behind the number arrived before the planning cycle

The calls gave the team the reason behind the number, which is what turns a tracked metric into something a planning conversation can use. They also corrected the working assumption the team had been carrying, and corrected it before the planning round rather than after, which is when a revision is still worth something.

The team set the program to repeat. Because the earlier conversations stayed searchable, each later reading took less scoping than the one before, and the comparison between readings became the thing they used.
