BluWave vs AlphaSights vs GLG for private equity: what each one is for

BluWave, AlphaSights and GLG all help private equity firms reach outside expertise, but they do different jobs. AlphaSights and GLG are expert networks: they arrange conversations with former executives and specialists for research and diligence, and both also place advisors and directors. BluWave introduces firms and portfolio companies to vetted third party service providers who do portfolio work. Which one you need depends on whether you want an answer, an advisor or work done.

In short

BluWave, AlphaSights and GLG do different jobs for a private equity firm. AlphaSights and GLG are expert networks that arrange conversations with former executives and specialists for research and diligence, and both also place advisors and directors. BluWave connects firms and portfolio companies with vetted third party service providers for portfolio work. Match the network to the job.

The difference between BluWave, AlphaSights and GLG is what you buy

A comparison of BluWave, AlphaSights and GLG puts two kinds of firm side by side, and a third kind sits between them.

  • Expert networks, GLG and AlphaSights. You buy conversations. AlphaSights describes calls as its most common format, alongside surveys and longer term advisory work. GLG describes expert calls, surveys, an expert content library, events, and advisory and placement services.
  • A private equity service provider network, BluWave. You buy introductions to third party providers who then do the work. BluWave calls itself a private equity market network and enablement platform, and says it is not a consulting firm, an expert call network or a recruiter.
  • Senior advisor and operating partner networks. You buy time from experienced individuals over weeks or months. Operating partners are the senior operators who work with a private equity firm on its portfolio companies, and senior advisors are the executives brought in alongside them. All three firms describe a version of this.

If you want the model explained first, start with our guide to what an expert network is.

BluWave vs AlphaSights vs GLG for private equity comes down to the need you have

The table maps common private equity needs to the category that serves them and shows which firms in this guide describe it.

Needs often run in sequence. GLG describes moving an expert from a call to a deal advisor role and then to an independent director seat. Our guides to expert networks for private equity and the wider expert network comparison cover the call side in more detail.

Senior advisor networks support value creation after close

After close, the work moves from questions to execution. Operating partners and portfolio company leaders need people who can act on a value creation plan, such as a pricing lead, a procurement specialist or an experienced chair.

BluWave describes senior advisors as functional and industry experts engaged below board level for hold period support. GLG ties former C level executives and board placements to early ownership planning. AlphaSights describes help after close such as sourcing add on acquisitions, customer benchmarking and preparing for buyer diligence before an exit.

When you compare senior advisor networks for private equity value creation, four questions separate the options.

  • Fit to the plan: whether the advisor has run the function in a business like yours, not only advised on it.
  • Engagement terms: whether the advisor is paid by the hour, on a retainer or through a placement fee, and who contracts with them.
  • Route to a role: whether an advisor can become an interim executive, a director or a hire.
  • Independence: how the network checks for conflicts with your other holdings and with the target.

An expert network for independent directors works through placement, not calls

A board seat is a different engagement from an expert call. A call is a conversation of about an hour. A director joins for a term, takes on responsibilities to the company and is chosen by the board and the sponsor.

All three firms describe board work. GLG's board placements page speaks to private equity firms and portfolio company boards, covers independent director and non executive roles, and describes pay at placement pricing. BluWave lists board recruitment for independent directors with operating depth and sector board experience, with an upfront connection fee credited against the placement fee. AlphaSights lists board placements among the forms its engagements can take.

GLG also describes carrying a trusted diligence advisor into a board seat. That continuity can save time, and it makes independence worth checking: confirm what the advisor has seen of the deal and what your governance rules say about directors who advised before close.

BluWave and consultant marketplaces filter service providers differently

When you weigh BluWave vs consultant marketplaces for private equity service providers, the difference is the filter. Business Talent Group describes an on demand talent marketplace of management consultants, subject matter experts, boutiques and executives. Catalant describes a community of former consulting firm professionals and operators who embed within client teams, and lists private equity among the industries it serves.

BluWave's vetting asks applicants to show work with private equity firms or portfolio companies, and says general consulting experience alone does not qualify. Marketplaces describe consultants across industries and list private equity as one of them, while BluWave makes sponsor experience a condition of entry.

Ask any of them the same four things: who contracts with the provider, who pays whom, how providers are vetted and how a match is reviewed. BluWave's pricing page says the client does not pay BluWave for service providers, the provider pays a connection fee when work begins, and interim executives and consultants are paid through BluWave.

Where Nextyn fits

Nextyn is an expert network and primary research firm. It was founded in Mumbai in 2018 and has been headquartered in Singapore since 2022, and a dedicated US team serves active US mandates. Our clients include private equity firms, venture capital investors, hedge funds, investment banks, consulting firms and corporate strategy teams.

For a deal team, the starting point is expert calls with people who have run your target's market. Every expert is screened for conflicts and material non public information before booking, and every call lands in Nextyn IQ, where your team can search it later. Our approach is on the compliance page.

For portfolio work, we offer advisory boards, long term consulting support, interim and fractional executives and executive and board search. Executive search also runs through Marquee Global. You can read how we work with private equity teams, and see the work in our case studies, for example recruiting a non executive director for a utility transition and interim plant leadership through a committed production ramp.
